Net zero greenhouse gases
Since the launch of our One Planet: Engineering with Purpose Strategy in June 2021 we have been working towards our targets of achieving net zero emissions for scope 1 and 2 by 2030 and for scope 3 by 2050.
It’s one thing to promise the earth, but when it comes to climate change commitments, it’s essential to deliver them credibly too.
This is why we committed to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in 2021. In 2023, these targets were verified and approved by the SBTi.
Our key strategic targets
Overall Net Zero Target
• Reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by 2050
Near-Term Target
• Reduce absolute scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions 50.4% by 2032 from a 2021 base year
Long-Term Target
• Reduce absolute scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions 90% by 2050 from a base year 2021
Supporting Strategy Targets (Not approved by the SBTi^)
• Achieve overall net zero greenhouse gas emissions from scope 1 and 2 by 2030
• Source 100% of our electricity from renewable sources by 2030
• 20% reduction* in Group energy use from plant, equipment and building assets (compared to 2019) by 2025
*Target updated in 2022 based on analysis of available energy reduction opportunities across our Group.
^ These targets were not submitted to the SBTi for approval but are additional targets that are part of our One Planet Sustainability Strategy
How we’re committed to a renewable energy strategy
We seek out renewable energy sources and strive to reduce our energy use and waste production. Since 2022, more than half the electricity used across our Group has come from verified renewable energy sources and this proportion continues to grow. We generate our own renewable electricity at sites in Mexico, France, Germany and the USA while reducing energy and water use, greenhouse gas emissions and waste production at our facilities around the world.
How our TargetZero solutions will help customers meet their sustainability goals
Our innovative TargetZero solutions will help make our customers’ businesses more sustainable by decarbonising the generation of heat for their critical industrial processes, including the raising of steam. TargetZero was created through a collaboration between Steam Thermal Solutions and Electric Thermal Solutions, bringing together the expertise across our Businesses to provide flexible and practical options for our customers to decarbonise production processes at any stage in a plant’s life.
