We seek to address climate change and environmental risks within our own operations, based on the efficient use of energy, water and raw materials, better waste management processes, pollution reduction measures and through initiatives to enhance biodiversity. We also educate our wider value chain on how to become more sustainable through our Sustainability Supplier Portal.
By investing in local teams and skills we have rolled out greenhouse gas reduction roadmaps and environmental actions plans in each manufacturing facility.
These include actions focusing on waste elimination, making impactful investments in support of our decarbonisation, water and waste targets, and ensuring we educate and empower staff to enable their effective implementation.
Key actions being implemented include: the transition from fossil fuels to electricity for raising heat and steam, generating or sourcing renewable electricity, moving to an electric vehicle fleet, automation of metering and utility monitoring, eliminating waste sent to landfill and investing in protecting habitat through supporting the work of the World Land Trust.
Our alignment with the SBTi Net Zero Standard
Our near- and long-term net zero targets have been verified and approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), another important step taken on our sustainability journey.
The SBTi is a global collaboration that enables businesses to set ambitious emissions reduction targets in line with the latest climate science and the goals of the Paris Agreement, then verify and validate those targets against science-based criteria.
To help demonstrate the importance of the commitments made as part of our One Planet: Engineering with Purpose Sustainability Strategy, Spirax Group signed up to the Business Ambition for 1.5°C campaign in 2021. It encourages companies to achieve net zero emissions in scopes 1, 2 and 3 by 2050.
Our targets verified and approved by the SBTi are to:
• Reduce near-term absolute scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions 50.4% by 2032*
• Achieve net zero no later than 2050 in scope 1, 2 and 3, which includes a minimum 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions*
• Reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by 2050
*From a 2021 base year
Alignment with ISO 14001
ISO 14001 is an international environmental management standard which demonstrates that the environmental impacts of a business are being identified, managed and improved.
The majority of our operating companies have achieved certification to ISO 14001 (excluding recent acquisitions) and the remaining companies are set to achieve certification by the end of 2025.
